St. John Lucas The Demeter of Cnidos
Poking around the Internet for the stories of St. John Lucas, I found his "The Demeter of Cnidos" via the Hathi Trust archive. The story was published in Longman's magazine (v.46, 1905) and shows a young poet struggling to come to terms with life. I especially enjoyed the story's initial sentence, which instantly seized my attention and made me laugh out loud:
The young man, who was a poet by stealth, and the middle-aged man, who was a professor of archaeology, were standing in front of the Demeter of Cnidos, and the middle-aged man was speaking in the manner acquired by those who lecture to the ill-informed and enjoy a permanent income.
